Topic Study on the surface crack formation mechanism on the slab during the steel manufacturing process
Contents The surface crack formation on the steel slab during the continuous casting brings a significant economic loss because it should be removed from the steel surface for the following hot-rolling process. The origin of the surface crack formation was classified into three major factors: the carbide precipitation, the impurity segregation, and ferrite-film formation at the grain boundaries. Even though the individual origin could explain the surface crack formation under specific conditions, the intrinsic origin of surface crack formation is still veiled. This study reports the inherent mechanical properties of the steel at high temperatures. Based on the physical metallurgy principle, the correlation between the theoretical decohesion stress and the hot ductility of the steel will be explained. Finally, the steel's intrinsic ductility and surface crack formation at high temperatures are discussed.
