Contents | In this talk, I will introduce citizen science and rethink the meanings of scientific data. Citizen science was first suggested in the 1990s by Alan Irwin, a sociologist, and Richard Bonney, an ornithologist, separately to suggest a scientific practice that engages broader non-experts. Today, various citizen science projects are pursued with diverging goals globally, including scientific data collection and analysis, environmental monitoring, addressing societal challenges, and democratization of science. The development of data science accelerates the mass data collection, process, and public accessibility to data for citizen science, raising new concerns on data ethics. Using two cases of citizen science in Korea, environmental health activism and environmental monitoring, and recent global policy discourse about open science and citizen science, this talk suggests that citizen science data entails values beyond its scientific qualities, thus demanding a deeper understanding of political claims that practice of data collection and analysis embodies. |
